Bruce Allen to NFL “Come at Me Bro!”

Today reports surfaced that the NFL was fining the Redskins 36 million dollars for front loading contracts in the uncapped year.

Ate problem with that is there was ya know, no salary cap or rules against reworking deals to get under the cap.

I for one was pumped when the team fixed the ten years of “cap hell” they had suffered under Vinny Cerratto. So I was especially ticked off to hear that the Redskins went from nearly 40 million in cap today to next to nothing.

Then Bruce Allen did his best Clint Eastwood impression with his official quote on the situation:

“The Washington Redskins have received no written documentation from the NFL concerning adjustments to the team salary cap in 2012 as reported in various media outlets. Every contract entered into by the club during the applicable periods complied with the 2010 and 2011 collective bargaining agreements and, in fact, were approved by the NFL commissioner’s office. We look forward to free agency, the draft and the coming football season.”

If no one has told you this today Bruce, I freaking love you!

Even if it looks like this whole cluster of fines sticks it’s nice to know this front office has the stones to stand up for itself against Pappa Goodell.

  1. 1) A memo is not legally binding.
    2) The legally binding contract that all NFL teams agree to is the salary cap which did not exist that year. Since there was not a salary cap that year neither the Dallas Cowboys or the Washington Redskins broke any legal agreements with the other teams or the NFL.
    3) Any attempt by Roger Goodell to tell or force owners not to spend above a certain amount and to create a “invisible salary cap” is an act of collusion on the part of the commissioner and is a crime and Goodell needs to go to prison.
    4) Roger Goodell has no proof that Dallas or Washington made the deliberate effort to take advantage of an uncapped year for an unfair competitive advantage. Further seeing how both teams sucked that year and have sucked since there is no proof they did that. Also by some of the actions they did not take such as not releasing aging vets that further makes it harder to claim either organization made the effort to seek an unfair competitive advantage.
    5) the NFL signed off on the contracts both teams made that year. If the league office did not approve of the contracts that the Cowboys and Redskins made in 2010 the time to address was 2010 and not 2012.
    6) The memo’s came out after the the decision was made to go with an uncapped season. The NFL changed the rules after the fact. In the legal arena this is called ex post facto law.

I hope Roger Goodell is ready to watch this season from a courtroom
